The head of the International Police Cooperation Centre (INTERPOL) of the General Police Inspectorate, Viorel Țentiu, was placed under arrest for 30 days, being accused of employing a corruption scheme involving persons subject to INTERPOL Red Notices. The decision was taken by judges of the Court of Chisinau City, IPN reports.
The head of the Anticorruption Prosecutors Office, Veronica Dragalin, said that Viorel Țentiu is charged with two counts. The request to arrest him was made on June 5 and the court hearing took place on June 6.
The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office said that out of five people detained in this case, four were released by the prosecutor after ascertaining that there was no basis for applying the preventive measure.
The searches and arrests are part of a joint investigation of the Republic of Moldova and the French Republic conducted with the assistance of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) into an alleged corruption scheme through which public figures in Moldova and other countries took bribe from people on Interpol’s Red Notices watchlist to help them get asylum or refugee status.
