Heavy rains forecast for tonight and tomorrow
Heavy rains, accompanied by electrical discharges and scattered hail, are expected tonight and tomorrow, with the level of rainfall forecast to approach 25 liters per square meter. The rains could last until July 2 inclusive, Moldova's chief weatherman Ilie Boian told today the meeting of the Governmental Commission for Emergencies, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Ilie Boian said the situation is getting dangerous, considering that the level of rainfalls in recent days has ranged from 15 to 50 liters per square meter. Heavy rains are also expected in Ukraine.
Water Agency director Ion Lupu said that following the abundant rainfall last night there is a risk of flooding in a number of locations and some local dams could collapse. Local roads were also affected.
The discharge at the Novodnestrovsk dam reservoir was increased to 1,600 cubic meters per second. At such a discharge, the beach in the suburban town of Vadul lui Voda could be completely submerged.
Due to overflowing at the Costesti-Stinca dam, the water level of the Prut River continues to rise.
Prime Minister Vlad Filat said the Government's ordinary meeting on Wednesday will consider relief actions.
