The Association of Historians of Moldova asks the Ministry of Education to review the history textbooks. Members of the organization say the texts formulated by the former Communist government promote imperialism and Marxism. “We want to reveal a number of things that have been hidden,” the Association's president Sergiu Musteata said in a news conference held at Info-Prim Neo News Agency.
The historians said there must be created a working group that would decide how history should be taught in schools. The Association suggested that the Ministry of Education should include history in the list of Baccalaureate exams as this would motivate the students to devote more attention to this subject and would contribute to the development of their personality.
Sergiu Musteata said that there should be formulated a national history teaching strategy and a new national curriculum.
The historians consider that a transparent tender contest should be organized for working out new history textbooks. The contenders must propose minimum two texts for every grade and should include more editors.
One history textbook is proposed for the fourth grade, while for the fifth-ninth grades – two texts – Romanians' History and Universal History. The tenth-twelfth graders should debate history-related problems.
As to the existing Integrated History textbooks, the historians said that they do not meet the contemporary education standards. The former government printed them without taking into account the report of the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, which recommended revising the texts.
Teacher Pavel Parasca, an active member of the Association of Historians, considers that the new authorities should annul all the projects initiated and implemented by the former government. “I think it is time that we restore the historical education,” he said.
The Integrated History course was introduced in schools in 2006.
