Hotbed of African swine fever in Beșghioz village

A hotbed of African swine fever was reported in Beșghioz village of ATU Gagauzia. In a private farm situated on the outskirts of the village, two pigs got infected and died in several days. The animals were burned and buried. Quarantine was introduced in the village for 45 days.

Asked by IPN to provide details, Vitalie Carauș, head of the Sanitary – Veterinary Surveillance Division of the National Public Health Agency, said disinfection measures were taken at the private farm. The animals in the village are now being counted and quarantine measures are being taken.

Filters to check and disinfect units of transport were set up at the entrance and exit of the village. The filters are ensured by carbineers, local police and veterinarians. If these find pork and pork products, they will confiscate and destroy them.

The local animal owners cannot transport live pigs or pork outside the locality. The killing of animals is allowed only in the own yard, under the control of the veterinarian and only for own consumption.

The African swine fever is not dangerous for humans, but is lethal for domestic pigs and wild boars.

This is the second hotbed of African swine fever in Beșghioz. The first hotbed last May affected three private farms.
