The Moldova Institute for Human Rights (IDOM) asked the Ministry of the Interior to dismiss two police officers and the Prosecutor General's Office (PG) to sue them for damages as it was their fault that the Government of Moldova was ordered to pay €8,000 in damages by the European Court of Human Rights, the Institute's director Vanu Jereghi informed in a news conference, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. IDOM also asked the PG to open a legal case against the two police officers, Constantin Avornic and Vasile Olaru, who attacked cameraman Ghenadie Brega in the Great National Assembly Square in May 2008. Jurist Vanu Jereghi, who is also adviser to the Minister of Justice Alexandru Tanase, considers that the Government and the taxpayers wouldn't have had to pay damages of €8,000 if the national courts had acted in accordance with the law. Though Ghenadie Brega submitted a complaint for being held under arrest for 50 hours without a plausible reason, prosecutors Sergiu Canter and Iurie Ghervas of the Buiucani Prosecutor's Office did not take legal action over the reported illegalities, but asked the court to reject the complaint. The ECHR ruled in favor of Ghenadie Brega and obliged the Government to pay him €8,000 damages. Vanu Jereghi said this money should be paid by the two police officers who attacked Ghenadie Brega. They should also cover the costs related to the cameraman's arrest. Vanu Jereghi also said that the ECHR in its resolution indicated the initials of the police officers. This and the fact that the case was examined during only two years shows that this is a serious case. “This case is a test for the new government and the new administration of the Ministry of the Interior and the Prosecutor General's Office, which should have taken steps already.” In a news conference today, Minister of the Interior Victor Catan said an internal inquiry is conducted into this case.
