If restrictions had been lifted immediately, number of infections would have been much higher, Igor Dodon

The Government realized that the number of infections with the novel coronavirus will increase and therefore decided to lift the imposed restrictions gradually so as not to overload the health system, said President Igor Dodon. He noted that the situation is under control and there are enough places in hospitals, doctors and medicines and the government copes with the situation.

“The decisions taken during a pandemic cannot be perfect. There are extremes. We should ban everything and extensively impose fines. But there will be dissatisfaction in this case as the people say: “We do not have what to eat and need money to maintain the family”. There is also the other extreme – to lift all the restrictions and annul all the fines so that we return to the normal life. In this case, we will have an explosion of the pandemic. That’s why there are no ideal decisions and swift ways out of the situation. We should find middle ways,” IPN quoted Igor Dodon as saying in the program “President Responds”.

He noted that if the previous restrictions are re-imposed, heavier fines will have to be instituted and this will generate dissatisfaction. The restrictions cannot be yet lifted altogether as this is dangerous.

As to an eventual second wave of infections in autumn, the official said he hopes the state of emergency will no longer need to be declared as this will imply more restrictions and even the annulment of the presidential elections.

As regards the parents’ request to reopen kindergartens, President Dodon stated that he understands the faced problems, but the children’s health is more important. They should wait for a period. The kindergartens could be reopened on July 1, not yet in June.
