Igor Dodon: Todays we saw level of support enjoyed by European integration idea

President Igor Dodon said everyone saw today the level of support enjoyed by the European integration idea. According to him, not even the ostensible pro-European MPs believe in the European course and want it enshrined in the Constitution. “It wouldn’t have been right for the ideology of some parties to become state ideology as something like this is antidemocratic and against the principle of pluralism of ideas,” stated Igor Dodon.

In a message on Facebook that is quoted by IPN, President Dodon said the Constitution provides that this issue cannot be put to the vote in Parliament again during a year. It is clear that after the parliamentary elections of February 24, 2019, there will be no pro-European majority.

“As regards the PDM’s proposal to hold a consultative referendum, we see now they apply double standards here. Last year they didn’t accept the consultative referendum I suggested on such subjects as: annulment of the billion law, dissolution of Parliament and early elections, reduction in the number of MPs from 101 to 71, introduction of the History of Moldova course in the school program. But we are not afraid to consult the people and accept the Democratic Party’s provocation,” stated Igor Dodon.

According to the President, the people want a balanced foreign policy and good relations with the East and with the West.

The vote for the Democratic Party’s initiative to amend the Constitution and enshrine the European integration objective in it failed. The MPs of the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, the Party of Socialists and the Party of Communists didn’t support the bill. The initiative garnered only 54 votes in favor and wasn’t thus adopted. A constitutional initiative is carried by the votes of 67 MPs.
