The interim president of the Supreme Court of Justice Aliona Miron was elected member of the Superior Council of Magistracy at the General Assembly of Judges on Friday, IPN reports.
Aliona Miron was the only judge who ran for the position of SCM member from among judges of the Supreme Court of Justice. She was voted for by 234 judges of the 288 who took part in the ballot.
Aliona Miron is the first judge who recently passed the vetting, a procedure by which a commission of national and foreign experts verifies the integrity of judges.
The Superior Council of Magistracy consists of six judges who are elected by secret ballot by the General Assembly of Judges and six non-judges who are appointed by Parliament. So far, the legislative body named Tatiana Ciaglic, Ion Guzun, Alexandru Postica, and Lucia Popescu. Earlier, the General Assembly of Judges nominated Vasile Șchiopu, Ioana Chironeț, Sergiu Caraman, and Maria Frunze. The four are judges of trial courts. The SCM now also includes Nina Cernat, a member of the previous composition of the Council. She is due to leave the SCM when a member is elected from among judges of the courts of appeals.
