Interior Minister justifies security fence at Communist rally
The police will not give up its practice to install portable security fences around places where large gatherings take place, no matter if it's a concert or a protest rally. “We will further use this measure, despite all the criticism against us. We will not let anyone step out of line”, said Interior Minister Victor Catan at a news conference today, responding to criticism from Communist Party (PCRM) demonstrators, who bumped into such fences when they gathered on May 1 outside the Government building for a May Day rally.
Justifying the fence, Minister Catan argued the police's main mission during rallies was to ensure the security of the participants and maintain public order.
The practice of installing portable fences was started on New Year's Eve after the police found firearms and knives on several people celebrating in the National Assembly Square. The latest case when a man was caught with a gun was at a concert in Chisinau's central plaza on April 28.
“We installed the fence (on May 1) because we had been notified of the protest rally of the association Salvgardare and of the PCRM. Some demonstrators had the intention to take down the fence, which falls under Art.67 of the Code of Administrative Offenses”, said Catan, adding that action would be taken against the offenders.
