Ion Munteanu has ‘very high expectations’ of Prosecutors Assembly

The General Assembly of Prosecutors, to be held next week, “is a very important event for the justice system”, acting Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu told a press club meeting on Thursday.

Munteanu said his expectations of the assembly are very high, and he is confident that the event will play out in such a way that there will be a functional Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP) in the end.

According to Munteanu, it is crucial for the Assembly to appoint members to the SCP, whose contribution is essential in the ongoing adjustment of criminal procedure legislation.

The Assembly is also expected to finally appoint chief prosecutors to district offices, many of which are currently headed by caretakers, and to confirm long-awaited promotions as well.

Munteanu added that his Office is at least 100 prosecutors short, and a functional SCP would be key in filling these positions as soon as possible.

Another subject to be discussed at the Assembly, according to Munteanu, is the ambiguous interpretation of the new pre-vetting rules, in particular what should happen to the prosecutors who don’t have a decision from the pre-vetting commission.

The acting Prosecutor General expects around 400 prosecutors to attend the General Assembly, or 70-80% of the total, considering that many are on vacation. Munteanu added that he has no signs that any of the prosecutors would boycott the event.

The General Assembly of Prosecutors is slated to take place next Wednesday, August 23.
