Japanese Culture Days to be celebrated in Moldova for first time

“Eugen Ionesco” Theater for the first time will stage the Japanese Culture Days in Chisinau on June 1-9, with the support of the Government of Moldova. The event is also supported by the Foundation for Moldovan-Japanese Relations and the Moldovan-Japanese Association for Culture and Civilization, IPN reports.

The program includes productions of Japanese theater and dance companies. There will be mounted Japanese creation workshops. Theater critic Eisuke Shichiji will give a conference themed “Modernity and tradition in the Japanese theater”.

The Japanese Culture Days will be opened with the play “Lost in a breeze of sakura flowers”, put on by Tokyo Engeki Ensemble. Over the next days, performances will be given by the dance ensemble Kanazawa Butoh Kan and the theater troupe Yamanote Jijosha. Creation workshops for children, youth and adults will be staged in the hall of “Eugen Ionesco” Theater during nine days. The participants will be instructed in the origami technique and Japanese calligraphy. There will be also held traditional Japanese games and the tea ceremonial.

“Eugen Ionesco” Theater artistic director Petru Vutcarau told a news conference centering on the Japanese Culture Days that the theater’s troupe intends to close every season with the Cultural Days of a country. Japan was chosen not accidentally as the theater has close cooperation relations with this country, where they had numerous tours and performances.
