The judicial system is affected by double standards and this allows some of the convicts to avoid serving time in jail. The issue was discussed in the talk show “Politics” on TV 7 channel, IPN reports.

The head of the Association “Justice and Uprightness” Ion Dron said the ordinary citizens who break the law are arrested and taken to jail right from the courtroom, while the convicts who earlier held responsible posts are allowed to freely go out. “It happened so in the case of former minister of the interior Gheorghe Papuc, former police officer Ion Perju, who was found guilty of murder, the woman judge from Criuleni, who was convicted of bribery. There is the problem of judicial police. But why some are arrested immediately after the sentence is passed, while others are allowed to go? It’s clear that this is selective justice,” he stated.

Lawyer Pavel Midrigan also considers that it is about double standards in the system. “The double standards are typical not only of the legal system, but also of the whole law enforcement system of Moldova. Let’s take the case of Baghirov, who was helped to run away. The court placed him under house arrest, but he wasn’t guarded. At the same time, other persons under house arrest are guarded round-the-clock,” said the jurist.

Teodor Carnat, who is a member of the Supreme Council of Magistrates, thinks such cases happen because there is no special body like the judicial police. “There are 17 cases when persons left the courtroom after being convicted and were then put on the wanted list. The panel of judges must deliberate and pass judgment. I think it is the prosecutor who should take measures for the convicted person to be arrested in the courtroom. But the prosecutor also does not know what the sentence will be so as to invite the police. Such situations could be avoided if there were the judicial police,” he stated.
