Prime Minister Iurie Leanca does not believe that an ultimate point was reached in the issue of the referendum arranged by the Gagauz authorities for February 2. Speaking in a meeting of the Gagauz legislature on January 22, the Premier made it clear that it’s not opportune to put up for referendum a subject about which the people weren’t informed or were unable to inform themselves, IPN reports.
“We cannot take decisions or create attitudes towards certain key documents without the possibility of reading or discussing them,” Iurie Leanca said, adding that the text of the Association Agreement with the EU, which includes the Agreement on the Creation of a Free Trade Area, was published in Russian only recently. There were just published brochures explaining the most important provisions.
“In the future, we will be very interested in sending experts to Comrat, Ceadar-Lunga and Vulcanesti, including from Brussels, so that they discuss definite elements of these agreements with those interested. I believe that these things should interest us all as the agreements cover all the aspects of our life,” stated Iurie Leanca.
The Governor of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzall promised the text of the agreement will be published on the website of the Executive Committee of Gagauzia.
As Speaker Igor Corman, the Premier reminded that legislative elections will take place in Moldova at the end of 2014. In these elections, all the Moldovans will be able to decide the further development course of the country. Therefore, the February 2 referendums are useless.
Iurie Leanca also spoke about the economic results achieved by Moldova last year. The data for the first nine months show a growth of 8%. “The preconditions this year are also good. The most important thing now is for the people to feel this through their salaries and pensions and by the number of workplaces. This is possible only by attracting foreign investments. Thus, Moldova should be predictable and have healthy judgment,” he added.
Besides Iurie Leanca, the meeting of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia was attended by Speaker Igor Corman, members of the Cabinet and a group of MPs. According to a communiqué from the Government, as a result of discussions it was decided to work out a complex strategy for developing the southern region. The initiative was welcomed by the representatives of the People’s Assembly and the Executive Committee of Gagauzia.
