Levees on Prut in Ungheni district belong to no one
The levees on the Prut River in Ungheni district were built with the help of the locals, without design documents. They are managed by no one and are now in a deplorable condition.
Alexandru Coronovschi, of Moldova’s Waters Agency, has told Info-Prim Neo that the levee in Medeleni, Ungheni, which is 2.6 km long, is broken in four places and needs to be repaired immediately. The levee in Ungheni town, which is 1.2 km long, is in a poor state and is in need of repair. The situation in Valea Mare, Costuleni, and Macaresti is much the same.
In a video conference of the Premier and district heads two weeks ago, the administration of Ungheni district said the levees on the Prut in this district have been managed with one’s own forces. The local authorities said they heard that money is being allocated from the Ecological Fund for the repair of barrages, but they received nothing.
About 70 million lei has been allocated from the Ecological Fund for the repair and construction of levees over the last three years. In 2012, there were fortified 27 km of levees and other hydrotechnical constructions in Hancesti, Anenii Noi, and Stefan Voda. The Ministry of the Environment said investments of 200 million lei are needed to prevent damage caused by floods.
