A man from Soroca town drowned last night in the Nistru River. According to the Border Police, he was taken out by another man who was on the riverbank, IPN reports.
“A patrol of the Soroca Border Police Section noticed a person on the bank of the Nistru River. The patrol approached for checks, and the person stated that he had already called the 112 Service, reporting that another person drowned in the river,” the Border Police said in a press release.
According to the statements, he managed to pull the drowned man to the shore and tried to give him first medical aid, but failed to. The employees of the Soroca Border Police Section secured the place until the arrival of a police crew.
According to the first examinations, the drowned person was a 55-year-old Moldovan citizen who lived in Soroca.
According to data of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, almost 50 people, including seven minors, have drowned in the country’s waterbodies so far this year.
Rescuers urge the population to respect the safety rules while swimming or staying on banks of waterbodies. Swimming during the dog days should be avoided. The persons who enter the water after prolonged exposure to the sun’s rays can suffer a thermal shock with fatal consequences. Swimming while intoxicated is also prohibited. Under the influence of alcohol, the blood pressure of the person entering the water can change suddenly and cause loss of consciousness, subsequently leading to tragic cases of drowning.
