Man killed in fire caused by cigarette
A 43-year-old man in Soldanesti district died early this morning in his home, chocking on fumes from a fire which most likely started after he fell asleep with a burning cigarette.
Liliana Puscasu, spokesperson for the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, has told Info-Prim Neo that the fire started around 2:00AM. The burning cigarette caused the bedclothes and the mattress to smolder and the man died intoxicated before the rescuers could save him. No significant damage was done to property and content.
The circumstances of the death are being investigated, including the possibility that the man consumed alcohol before going to bed. According to neighbors' accounts, the man had lived his entire life together with his parents, and when they died several years ago we remained all alone. He didn't have a wife and any children. His only family was a brother in Chisinau. Furthermore, the man was unemployed and earned his living through odd jobs.
On Tuesday and overnight into Wednesday, there were recorded 4 fires in Moldova, including one deadly.
