Manufacturers obliged to indicate substances that cause allergies or intolerance on label

Manufacturers are obliged to indicate on the label the substances that cause allergies or intolerance. The warning was issued by the National Agency for Food Safety, which noted that the improper labeling of food products, especially substances that cause allergies or intolerance, is one of the most widespread nonconformities detected during inspections, IPN reports.

Food operators that committed violations were issued with prescriptions to withdraw products from the market and to appropriately label products, but also with penalties in the form of a fine of up to 25,000 lei. Recently, on the initiative of the market economic operator, oat biscuits containing peanuts – an undeclared allergen – were recalled. A type of pate, which contained undeclared soybeans, was also withdrawn.

The National Food Safety Agency emphasizes the crucial importance of allergen labeling. The regulatory framework stipulates the ways of providing information on the presence of substances that can cause allergies or intolerance in non-prepacked foods.
