Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca promised the people protesting in front of the Chisinau City hall that he will call the Municipal Council for a meeting on Wednesday, September 30 to review the rise in the water and sewerage charges and the bus and trolleybus fares, Info-Prim Neo reports. Chirtoaca went out on the second-floor balcony of the City Hall and tried again to explain why the tariffs were raised and to convince the demonstrators to suspend the protests at least until the Municipal Council reconsiders the decision. The mayor could be hardly heard as the protesters chanted slogans encouraged by the organizer of the protest, the head of “Salvgardare” NGO Maia Laguta. The protesters agreed to disperse and return on Wednesday morning at 9.00 after Laguta said that they cannot remain at night without press supervision. According to her, the incident that happened earlier, when one of the protesters punched the Mayor, was a challenge. “Somebody hit the Mayor by accident, but he came out to the infuriated crowd intentionally, in order to provoke us.” About 2,000 people gathered in front of the City Hall by 14.00. They included pensioners, veterans as well as young people. None of them could speak into the microphone brought by Laguta as she said that she defended the interests of everyone and spoke in the name of all the protesters. The protesters agreed to come back on Wednesday, but did not hurry to leave the place of the protest. They formed smaller groups and discussed different issues, ranging from the status of the official language to the criteria of selecting those who 'deserve” participating in the protest. Chisinau General Commissioner Vladimir Botnari said that those who mistreated Dorin Chirtoaca will be identified and held accountable as police officers dressed in civies filmed the protests. According to him, the police did not intervene because the protesters were in general peaceful.
