Media nongovernmental organizations express their concern over the threats made against the team of “Ziarul de Garda” newspaper following the publication of investigative stories about corruption schemes at the Railway Terminal in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a statement from the NGOs.
After three parts of the article tilted “Corruption Train at Chisinau Railway Terminal” appeared in the latest numbers of the paper, the reporters, editors and members of the family of the investigation team as well as the sources that provided information started to be threatened by phone, email and directly.
The newspaper's team says the threats have a provocative character and intimidate those who were involved in the mentioned investigation.
“We share the concern of our colleagues from Ziarul de Garda and consider such threats against the journalists inadmissible as they do their duty honestly and inform the people about cases of corruption existing in Moldova.
“We ask the Ministry of the Interior and the Prosecutor General's Office to probe the cases identified by Ziarul de Garda. We call on the competent bodies to investigate the cases of press intimidation and inform the people about the investigation results. The media NGOs will monitor the results of these investigations,” says the statement.
The statement was signed by the Independent Journalism Center, the Electronic Press Association, the Investigative Journalism Center, “Acces-info” Center, the Committee for the Freedom of the Press, and the Association of Independent Press.
