MEI: Romania is main importer of Moldovan goods

Romania's imports from the Republic of Moldova have exceeded several times the Russian Federation imports of Moldovan products, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics for the first seven months of 2020, quoted in a Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure (MEI) press release.

The total value of Moldovan exports to the European market over the course of seven months was $893.5 million, which accounts for 64.7% of the total exports, while imports added up to $1.326 billion.

The volume of Moldovan exports to Romania equaled $357.05 million during the same period. At the same time, the volume of imports from Romania amounted to $348.73 million. As a result, the Moldova's trade balance with Romania amounted to $8.32 million. Romania has become Moldova's main trading partner, both in terms of export and import. Romania acquired, during the reference period, the largest volume of Moldovan products and occupied the first place in terms of goods supplied to Moldova, said the MEI press release.

"Romania has become the main importer of Moldovan products, being several times ahead of other strategic partners in this regard. These figures and facts are evidence of strategic cooperation. Furthermore, the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure focuses its efforts on implementing a complex bilateral agenda with all existing partners, but also on expanding the framework of trade and economic cooperation with as many countries as possible, which will open access to our producers to new markets", Minister Sergiu Railean was quoted as saying in the press release.

The second largest Moldovan trading partner from the EU is Italy, where $124.2 million worth of goods were imported, during the reference period. Other large European trading partners are Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain, Greece, Bulgaria, France and the Netherlands.

During the same period, Moldovan exports to CIS market added up to $220.8 million, which represents a 16% share of total exports. Imports amounted to $733.6 million.

Exports to the Russian Federation totaled $137.49 million, while Russian imports to our country were worth $337.61 million. According to January-July 2020 data, Moldova placed $37.9 million worth of goods on the Belarusian market and imported goods worth $56.5 million from Belarus. On the Ukrainian market, Moldovan exports equaled $33.7 million, while imports from Ukraine added up to $276.3 million.

Between January and July 2020, Moldova exported goods worth $264.9 million and imported $829.6 million worth of goods from all other countries.
