Ministry of Justice insists on drastic measures in fighting corruption in justice sector

The inter-department task force for the development of measures for combating corruption in the justice sector met on Thursday for its first institutionalized meeting, at the Ministry of Justice. Minister Oleg Efrim stated at the meeting that this group’s mission is a difficult one, since they have to approach a set of norms that are sensible for the members of this system. According to a communiqué from the Ministry, Oleg Efrim encouraged the group’s members not to be intimidated by resistance from within the system, because the planned measures will have a strong preventive effect in the interest of the entire society. The task force is expected to develop measures introducing harsher sanctions for corruption, such as deprivation of social benefits of corrupt officials, and introducing polygraph test for candidates to judge and prosecutor positions. The package will also include a measure that will ensure complete disclosure of wealth and income, as well as their origin. Oleg Efrim underlined the importance of developing consistent regulations for the application of special confiscation measures for unjustified wealth. The group is comprised of Ministry employees, representatives of the judicial body, experts delegated by the Anticorruption Prosecution Service, by the National Anticorruption Center, as well as from NGOs working in this field. Under a Ministry of Justice order, the group is to have completed the initiatives package by November 25. Afterwards, the proposed measures will be subjected to public debates and submitted to the Government for approval, so that the Parliament can examine and adopt them early into next year’s meetings.
