Moldo-German School to take place Aug. 24 – Sept. 13

The 8th summer school organized by Moldova-Institut Leipzig, in partnership with the State University of Moldova’s Philosophy and History Department and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will be hosted in Chisinau between August 24 and September 13. The school will bring together students from various German universities and this year’s topic is “Multi-ethnicity and regionalism in Moldova: historical, cultural and social aspects”, IPN reports.

The official opening is scheduled for August 25, at the National Library of Moldova. The program includes meetings with representatives of government institutions and civil society organizations. The students will also have intensive Romanian language classes, meant to improve their communication skills.

Participants will go on excursions to Chisinau, the Cruzesti county, Mascauti village, Curchi monastery, Bender, Tiraspol, Tvardita, Comrat and Odessa. Most of the students have an undergraduate degree in political and administrative sciences, cultural studies, social sciences, history, etc. They all have diverse motivations for attending the Moldo-German summer school, such as gathering data for their graduation thesis, learning about Moldova, about Moldova’s process of getting closer to the EU, its historical and cultural heritage, etc.

The program is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) within the “go east – Sommerschulen” Program of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It was started in 2009 by the head of Moldova-Institut Leipzig, professor and academician Klaus Bochmann, and is meant to act as a bridge between students from both countries and to increase the interest of German graduate and PhD students in Moldova and the Romanian language.
