Public TV channel Moldova 1 could remain without a director until the vacant seats on the Supervisory Board of IPNA “Teleradio-Moldova” (TRM) haven’t been filled. SB chairman Eugeniu Ribca told Info-Prim Neo that he received a letter from the parliamentary Commission on Culture and Mass Media which recommends the temporary suspension of the appointment contests for the Moldova 1 director until the three vacant SB memberships are filled. The new members will replace those who aren’t exercising their mandate. Ribca specified that a decision in this regard could be adopted only by the SB. According to Law, the SB has 9 members, but only 6 are currently exercising their mandate. “Thus, until the new members are appointed, no contests will be organized for the appointment of the Moldova 1 director”, said Ribca. The Law says that the Broadcasting Coordinator Council (CCA) should propose to the specialized parliamentary commission two candidates for each vacant seat in the SB. Afterwards, candidates are selected by the commission and then appointed or rejected by Parliament. One SB seat became vacant in 2010, after Igor Munteanu was appointed Moldova’s Ambassador to the US. CCA proposed two replacements: former Moldova 1 director Alexandru Grosu and economist Doina Jeleu. In April 2011 the mandate of another SB member expired. The proposed replacements were Alexandru Popovici and Petru Grozavu. In July 2011, CCA proposed Valeriu Turcanu and Larisa Calugaru to fill in the 9th SB vacant seat. The final decisions will be taken by the parliamentarians. The last failed attempt to elect a director for the public TV channel took place on September 14. None of the candidates gathered sufficient votes. According to the SB chairman, the problem doesn’t lie with candidates, but with the board members. Until the problem isn’t solved, there will be no results. Moldova 1 hasn’t had a director since Angela Sarbu’s resignation in March 2012.
