Moldova becomes member of UN Human Rights Council

The Republic of Moldova was elected a a member of the UN Human Rights Council for 2010-2013, for the first time. The elections took place at the UN General Assembly in New York. A number of 175 member countries voted in favor of Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. Moldova announced its candidacy for member of the Human Rights Council in 2006 and has engaged in the process of ensuring the observance of the human rights at the national and international levels. As a member, Moldova will have to prove consistency in implementing the ratified multilateral treaties on human rights, cooperate with the UN agencies and monitoring mechanisms and promote these mechanisms among the member states. The Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the UN system made up of 47 states responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe. The Council was created by the UN General Assembly on March 15, 2006 with the main purpose of addressing situations of human rights violations and make recommendations on them.
