Moldova commemorates soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Senior state officials laid flowers at the Memorial Complex “Holy Memory to the Sons of Homeland”, commemorating the soldiers killed in the war in Afghanistan. The event involved the President of Moldova, Speaker of Parliament and the Prime Minister, IPN reports.

In a posting on Facebook, President Igor Dodon says the current and future generations must honor the heroes who took part in the conflict in Afghanistan, while the political speculations on this issue should be stopped. The veterans of this conflict, alongside comrades from the other ex-Soviet republics, fulfilled their military duty with honor.

Igor Dodon noted he will institute the tradition to sign decrees to confer medals to participants in the war on the Day of Remembrance for Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan. During the 25 years of independence, only 31 participants in this war received orders and medals.

Prime Minister Pavel Filip expressed his respect and gratitude to the participants in the Afghanistan war and assured that the Government will support the veterans and their families, including by implementing the measures contained in the Plan “Memory. Honor. Respect”.

According to the Government’s press service, Pavel Filip said the heroes of this war are an example for the whole society. “We will be near you not only on this day. We will do our best for you to feel that we are near you daily,” stated the Premier.

Almost 13,000 Moldovans took part in the war in Afghanistan. Of these, about 300 were killed.
