Moldova gets equipment to locate and study radioactive sources
The National Regulatory Agency on Nuclear and Radiological Activity (ANRANR) will be able to more expeditiously locate and study radioactive sources thanks to a donation of state-of-the-art equipment from the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, Info-Prim Neo reports.
ANRAR director Artur Buzdugan said the donation, valued at around 1 million lei, represents an equipped vehicle that will be used to evaluate radioactive contamination.
The equipment will enable inspectors to test X-ray machines for safety at medical establishments across the country and prevent potential contamination of patients and medical personnel. It will also be used to detect so-called orphan sources.
The cooperation with the Swedish Authority was initiated in 2011. In the first year of cooperation the Authority offered technical assistance to its Moldovan counterpart agency in the form of training and equipment valued at roughly 50,000 euros. In the second year it signed a framework agreement, which was endorsed by the Government in June, whereby it committed to further providing technical assistance to ANRANR during 2012-2014.
