Moldova gets rid of cluster bombs

The Ministry of Defense of Moldova and the NGO “Norwegian Peoples Aid” Monday signed a memorandum of understanding to destroy the National Army's stores of cluster munitions, Info-Prim Neo reports. Andrei Serban, the head of the National Army's Logistics Department, said that 78 cluster bombs inherited from the Soviet Army will be destroyed as part of the project. Specialists of the National Army, helped by five Norwegian consultants, will transport the bombs to a special base, where they will be disassembled and then destroyed by explosion. The bombs that will be disassembled this week are over 2 meters long, weigh up to 500 kilograms and have a radius of action of about 5,000 square meters. On behalf of the Norwegian organization, the memorandum was signed by project manager Lee Moroney. “Moldova was the 94th country of the 104 that signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions,” Lee Moroney said. “At the same time, Moldova is among the first in the region that started to destroy these munitions. This is a plus for stability and security and an experience that can be shared with other countries,” During the last five years, Moldova destroyed about 1,200 tonnes of outdated munitions.
