Moldova is expected to lose one more case at ECHR, lawyer

Moldova could lose another case at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and be obliged to pay about 12,000 euros in damages from the budget to the plaintiff, said Roman Zaidonov, the lawyer for Mihai Ferari, who complained that his right to liberty was infringed and that he was subjected to inhuman treatment to the ECHR, Info-Prim Neo reports. The European Court will examine this case as an emergency, Zaidonov told a news conference on Wednesday. Mihai Ferari was detained in October 2008, accused that he did not return 500 euros to a client. The man was to install gutters on the client’s house. He took the money to purchase the necessary materials. But the client changed up his mind when the works were close to an end. According to the lawyer, Mihai Ferari had been held in the remand center of the Rascani Police Department in Chisinau in appalling conditions for 30 days. “My client was arrested illegally and held in the remand center without water and food. There was no bed, no toilet and no shower in the cell,” Roman Zaidonov said. The lawyer also said that the court issued the arrest warrant without studying his client’s case. The Government of Moldova is to pronounce on this case within 12 weeks.
