Moldova jumps 13 places in UN’s e-government rankings

Moldova places 80th in terms of e-government out of 192 nations ranked by the UN Global E-Government Survey 2010, an improvement of 13 places from the previous publication, Info-Prim Neo has learned from the Moldovan Ministry of Information and Communication Technology. ICT Minister Alexandru Oleinic is even more optimistic about Moldova’s performance in the next survey, after the Ministry will have implemented an ample set of activities this year. “Efforts in e-government over the past years had been erratic, which resulted in very low levels of efficiency”, said the minister. Experts at the ICT Ministry have arrived at the conclusion that the main impediment in the path of e-government is the absence of a central agency which would be invested with adequate authority to effect change. The Ministry signed a cooperation agreement with the Singaporean government to learn from the experience of its e-government agency for the purpose of creating an e-government Center in Moldova. The UN Global E-Government Survey each year assesses the 192 member states of the UN according to a quantitative composite index of e-government readiness based on website assessment, telecommunication infrastructure and human resource endowment.
