Together with nations all over the world Moldova, too, observes the Refugee Day on June 20 through a number of events, which include a theatrical performance at Satiricus during June 19-21, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The World Refugee Day serves to remind the global community of the millions of people displaced by conflicts and violence. The Moldovan Office of the UN's refugee agency UNCHR in cooperation with the Moldovan Refugee Division of the Migration and Asylum Bureau are organizing on this occasion a series of events to raise awareness of the problems faced by asylum seekers and refugees.
“Our intention is to integrate these persons into our society”, says Ecaterina Silivestru, the head of the Refugee Division.
The asylum seekers and people that have found refuge in Moldova come from about 30 countries. As of June 1, Moldova hosted 144 refugees that enjoyed humanitarian protection and 64 other refugees awaiting a court decision.
Moldova ratified the Convention and Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees in 2001, committing itself to protecting refugees. In 2008 Moldova adopted the Asylum Law, which is considered by the UNCHR as a significant step toward the advancement of the national asylum system. In 2009 Moldova became member of the UNCHR Executive Committee.
