Moldova projected to have 1.5m people in 2130
By 2050, Moldova will lose 1 million people, while in 2130 the population will total 1.5 million, shows the study “Demographic problems of national framework”.
In a meeting of the Club “Prosanatate” with representatives of UNDP Moldova, study author Valeriu Sainsus said the decline is due to the reproduction crisis, population ageing and excessive migration. “We lose by three-four villages every year. In the post-industrial period, we lost over 300 villages. The depopulation level in the Moldovan villages is now high owing to excessive migration from villages to towns and to emigration,” said Valeriu Sainsus.
According to the study, by 2015 Moldova will lose more than 76,000 women of reproductive age. Currently, a woman of reproductive age gives birth to one child on average. In order to ensure the change of generations, a woman should give birth to at least two children, while for demographic growth – to three children. It should be noted that the conception and childbirth potential is 18-20 children.
“Moldova is now in the 20th depopulation year. The losses of people until now have been assessed at over 300,000, except the Transnistrian region. The birth rate in rural areas is the lowest,” said Valeriu Sainsus.
The study shows that the length of a marriage in Moldova is 12 years. The decision to divorce is taken easier than the decision to get married. As a result of excessive emigration, Moldova loses 1.5% of its population annually.
Boris Galca, Deputy UNFPA Representative in Moldova, said the state should encourage the giving birth of children and implement relevant social policies. “It is important to have demographic potential so as to prevent Moldova’s disappearance as a state. There should be set up a demographic center that would not only collect statistical data, but would also make forecasts and work out strategies for stimulating population rise,” he stated.
The study “Demographic problems of national framework” was produced with the support of UNFPA.
