Moldova snatch draw with Greece

Moldova managed to hold Greece to a draw, 1-1, in Chisinau in a 2010 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Greeks opened the scoring in the first half with the effort of Theofanis Gekas. In the second half, the Tricolors got into gear and on 74 minutes the guests had quite a scare when Valeriu Catinsus headed against the post. Eventually Moldova’s efforts paid off when Valeriu Andronic volleyed a leveler in the first minute of added time, putting a dent in the Greeks’ hopes of reaching the World Cup finals. Elsewhere in Group Two, Israel hammered Luxembourg with 7-0, while Latvia drew 2-2 with leader Switzerland. After yesterday’s round of matches, the standings have Switzerland in the lead with 17 points, followed by Greece and Latvia with 14 points each, Israel with 12 points, Luxemburg with 5 points, and Moldova with 3 points. The next encounters are scheduled for October 10, when Moldova will travel to Israel, Greece will host Latvia, and Luxembourg will host the Swiss. Spain, England, the Netherlands, South Korea, North Korea, Australia, Brazil, Ghana and Japan have already clinched World Cup berths.
