The editorial staff of the daily “Moldova Suverana” is not disposed to renounce the brand. They informed the journalists about this in a news conference on Friday, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The title “Moldova Suverana” belongs to the staff, not the Government or the State Chancellery. The Press Law says that if the state institutions do not start another publication during a month of the liquidation of a newspaper, the editorial staff can use the paper’s title and continue its work,” said the newspaper’s editor Ion Berlinschi. According to the journalist, after the Government abandoned the official paper “Moldova Suverana”, the staff took over the name of the paper and continued work in another organizational form. The current administration of the paper registered the name “Moldova Suverana” with the State Registration Chamber. Five years after the liquidation of the state-owned paper, the State Chancellery registered the brand “Moldova Suverana” as its own with the State Agency on Intellectual Property. “The State Chancellery and the zealous servants of Vladimir Filat claim that we did not finish the liquidation of the official paper,” Ion Berlinschi said, stressing that the paper “Viata Satului” was liquidated 15 years ago, but has not yet been struck off the Register of the State Registration Chamber. “The Government does not need our title in order to create another paper. It wants to sell it to a businessman who intends to start a profitable business on the basis of the brand of a media outlet,” said the editor. Mihai Contiu, a member of the editorial team, said the Government’s decision of February 2010 to stop the liquidation of “Moldova Suverana” runs counter to the legislation of the European Court of Human Rights, which says that only the legislative body can take such decisions. The paper’s staff intends to file a complaint to the ECHR. In 2005, the paper “Moldova Suverana” changed its status from state-owned company into limited liability company.
