The global population reached 7 billion, but Moldova witnesses a continuous decrease in the birth rate and serious depopulation. Demographers anticipate that the country’s population will decrease to 2.5 million in 2050, down 1 million from now, Info-Prim Neo reports. The late marriages and birth giving, the low birth rate and massive migration are among the main causes that lead to depopulation in Moldova, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Moldovanu told a news conference. According to him, the Government of Moldova is making considerable effort to increase natality by developing different programs to support the young families. The birth rate is low because more and more families decide to have by one child, not two or three, while the women go abroad in large numbers. “This migration process cannot be stopped, but should be managed correctly at Government level,” said Mihai Moldovanu. Demographer Valeriu Sainsus said that a number of events happened this century that crucially changed the demographic trends. “Regretfully, Moldova saw an involution and serious depopulation. We forecast that Moldova will have a population of 5 million people in the 21st century, but it will not happen,” he stated, adding that Moldova’s population will decrease by 2 million until 2130. UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Kaarina Immonen said the death rate is high fertility low at global level and important investment is needed to balance these rates.
