Moldovan doctors employ new methods of treating cervical cancer

The doctors in Moldova in 2012 started to implement combined treatment for cervical cancer at advanced stages. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, university lecturer Mircea Sofroni, who manages the Oncology Institute’s Scientific Oncological-Gynecological Laboratory, said the length of life increases by five years as a result of this treatment. Cervical cancer comes first in the structure of female genital tract morbidity. As many as 4,150 women received or are receiving treatment for cervical cancer in Moldova. A number of 310-320 new cases of cervical cancer are recorded in Moldova annually. If the women go to the doctor late and are diagnosed with cervical cancer at advanced stages, the doctors try to help them using combined treatment methods. “Last year, Moldova won a cooperation project in oncological gynecology for implementing combined treatment for cervical cancer at advanced stages – radiotherapy together with chemotherapy. The project involves such countries as France, Germany, Romania, Serbia, and Austria. The project will last until 2014. We also administered a new preparation that increases immunity,” said Mircea Sofroni. About 150-160 women diagnosed with cervical cancer die annually in Moldova. Their average age is 45-49 years.
