Moldovan-French waste management project implemented in Telenesti district

Four villages of Telenesti village - Verejeni, Ratus, Banesti and Chitcanii Vechi – since July have taken part in a Moldovan-French waste management project that envisions the building of a biodegradable waste composting station. The project is implemented by the French waste sorting and management company Savoie Déchets with the assistance of the Embassy of France in Chisinau.

In a news conference at IPN, Martine Zejgman, attaché for cooperation at the Embassy of France, said the project will help improve the quality of the environment and water, the ecological situation and will ensure cleanness in communities. The waste situation will be examined and the population will be sensitized to the importance of collecting waste. A probationer proposed by the mayor’s office of the involved villages will go to France to see how the waste is managed there.

Savoie Déchets director Pierre Tournier said that since 2014 the French public collectivities specialized in the collection and processing of waste can allocate up 1% of their budget for international cooperation activities. They did this to and their objective is to have a project that will last in time. For the first stage, they allocated €30,000 lei. For next year, they will adopt a budget based on the evolution of the project. “Our goal is not to impose a solution, but to together find a solution to the waste problem,” he stated.

Jean-Luc Martel, expert in the management of organic waste at Savoie Déchets, said about 80% of the waste in Moldova is biodegradable. The composting platform in Moldova will process namely this type of waste. The obtained compost will be used in agriculture as fertilizer.

Mayor of Chitcanii Vechi Alexandru Taburceanu said ecological culture should be promoted among the people so that these do not throw litter. “We hope that concrete steps will be taken in 2019 and we will closely cooperate in this regard so as to do something for our communities,“ he stated.

Mayor of Ratus Tudor Turcanu said large quantities of waste are stored in Moldova’s villages and this has a negative impact on the population’s state of health. The mayors learned about the possibility of applying to such a project in a seminar staged by the Embassy of France. The waste collected in the communities involved in the project so far has never been sorted and processed.

Savoie Déchets is a public company based in southeastern France. This treats 135,000 tonnes of waste a year. It manages two waste collection centers. The company’s annual budget is €25 million.
