Moldovan MFA examines allegations against ambassador Camerzan revealed by Portuguese media
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration is carefully examining the facts revealed by the Portuguese press concerning the alleged involvement of some officials from the Moldovan Embassy in Portugal in fraudulent activities of organizing illegal immigration, the Ministry's spokesperson, Valeriu Turea has told Info-Prim Neo.
Mr Turea added that in conformity with relevant international agreements, the Moldovan authorities will ask the relevant Portuguese bodies for information on the case. The Ministry will inform the public opinion about the results of the investigations.
Moldova's acting ambassador to Portugal Mihail Camerzan is suspected, together with three other former members of the Moldovan diplomatic mission, of having links to a criminal group specializing in illegal migration. Protected by diplomatic immunity, the four officials escaped criminal charges in Portugal, yet after the recent recall of ambassador Camerzan all of them are expected to return home.
As the Portuguese daily Diario de Noticias reported, the criminal group was headed also by a Moldovan citizen, a woman named Dorina Tintiuc. Chairing a merely nominal international association named after the poet Mihai Eminescu, the woman was using her position to issue invitations to various events to the Moldovans who otherwise wouldn't have reached Portugal. Investigations established that the woman had links to the Moldovan diplomats.
