Moldovan Romanies educated on sexual and reproductive health

Teens, women and men of Roma ethnicity from Lucaseuca village of Orhei district have participated in an informative session on family planning and the dangers of domestic violence. The event was held as part of the awareness-raising campaign “Don't Forget! Your Health Means Your Family's Health” launched on September 10 this year, Info-Prim Neo reports. Viorica Gherman, program coordinator at the Family Planning Society, told the reporters that the campaign is aimed at informing and educating the Moldovan Romanies, who do not have access to quality medical, sexual and reproductive services. Though the Roma have certain concessions, they do not claim them as they don't know about them. For example, they can benefit from the products offered by the family planning offices free of charge, Gherman said. “It is a visible shortcoming for the health of the Romany people. A large part of them suffer from tuberculosis. Many pregnant women are not under medical supervision. The Romanies do not have health policies. Many of them do not know that they have a family doctor in the village. Some of them do not understand Romanian and cannot put a signature when needed.” Eleonora Strasnic, who is a nurse at the hospital in Lucaseuca, said that the Roma ethnics seldom ask the doctor for help. “Though they have the possibility of purchasing health policies at a lower price by March, they refuse to, saying they do not have money. They come to the doctor only when there is no other way out. There are many Roma families where the adults do not work and the sale of walnuts is their own source of income.” About 700 of the approximately 2,100 residents of Lucaseuca are Roma ethnics. The campaign “Don't Forget! Your Health Means Your Family's Health” closes on October 31. Informative sessions for the Roma from eight villages were planned to be held during September 10 and October 31. The awareness-raising campaign forms part of the Promoting Access to Basic Services, Human Security and Social Inclusion of Vulnerable Groups in Moldova Project implemented with support from the Government of Romania and the United Nations Population Fund.
