Moldovans believe EU is as powerful as a lion

The general public and most of the opinion leaders consider that the European Union by its cooperation activities contributes to the promotion of peace, stability and democracy in Moldova, shows the Surveys and Research Project financed by the EU, Info-Prim Neo reports. 58% of the opinion leaders have in general a positive attitude towards the Moldova – EU relations. Only 41% of the respondents consider that the EU’s involvement in Moldova is sufficient. 71% of those polled from among the general public believe the relations between Moldova and the EU are good and only 11% said it was bad, while 1% - very bad. Both of the groups of respondents – the general public and opinion leaders – would like the EU to play a more important economic role in Moldova, among the priorities being trade, regional cooperation and promotion of democracy. Even if 77% of the opinion leaders consider that they know about the EU’s activities, only 60% really have knowledge of this. 4% of those questioned underestimated the EU’s financial support. This shows that the respondents have a positive attitude to the EU and its actions in Moldova. The survey also shows that the Moldovan people consider the European Union a powerful authority. Asked what animal the EU can be compared with, most of the respondents said the lion. Among other animals mentioned are the horse, elephant and dog. The poll covered a sample of 103 opinion leaders and 400 representatives of the general public. The Surveys and Research Project is implemented in the countries covered by the European Neighborhood and Partnership Policy.
