Moldovans could obtain Romanian nationality during only five months
The Ministry of Justice of Romania at Wednesday’s meeting of the Government will propose amending the Law on Nationality as an emergency matter. In an interview for Radio Romania Actualitati, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice Alina Bica said that if the Law on Nationality is modified, the Moldovans could obtain Romanian nationality easier and quicker, during only five months not a year as at present, Info-Prim Neo reports.
If the amendments are approved, the number of employees of the Ministry’s Citizenship Division will be increased in order to hasten the procedures. Alina Bica also said that the Moldovans will not have to go to the interview that was mandatory for all the persons that wanted to obtain or regain the Romanian nationality. The applicants will only submit the set of documents needed and statements on one’s own responsibility that they had not cooperated and do not cooperate with foreign services and do not have a criminal record.
According to Alina Bica, until 2006 the citizenship granting procedures were slow and only tens or hundreds of people obtained Romanian nationality a year. “The Moldovan that filed the applications according to the old procedure will meet difficulties because the documents submitted by them are out-of-date, as for example the criminal record. So, the Romanian authorities are now forced to recover these documents, but the Moldovan authorities are not very willing to cooperate,” Bica said.
The Secretary of State said that the Moldovans can obtain Romanian nationality quicker if they submit the documents directly to the Citizenship Division of the Ministry of Justice in Bucharest, not at the Consulate in Chisinau. “If the Moldovan citizens come and file the application at the Citizenship Division, they will obtain the Romanian nationality quicker because the Division processes and registers the applications rapidly,” Alina Bica said.
