Moldovans in Lithuania: We are sorry we speak Lithuanian better than Romanian
The Moldovans living in Lithuania say the embassies of Moldova abroad should celebrate the National Dictation Day. They made the proposal at a meeting with Moldova's Acting President Mihai Ghimpu, who is paying a visit to Vilnius together with MP Ion Hadarca during March 11-12, the presidential press service informs, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
Representatives of the Moldovan community in Vilnius told Mihai Ghimpu that the celebration of the National Dictation Day on the first Sunday of February will represent a homage to poet Grigore Vieru, who was born on February 14, and a tradition of promoting the Romanian language.
Mihai Ghimpu informed the Moldovans that the Government intends to implement a state program to support the representatives of the diaspora and help them preserve the national traditions.
He stressed the necessity of signing an agreement to ensure the social protection of the Moldovans settled in Lithuania, organizing Romanian language courses and supplying the representatives of the diaspora with books and aids for teaching the younger generations.
Lucia Andrievschi-Bartkiene, the head of the Romanian Language and Culture Association “Dacia”, said there are more than 700 Moldovans in Lithuania and most of them settled in this country before Moldova declared its independence. “We do not face serious problems as other diasporas, but we are sorry we know Lithuanian better than Romanian,” she said.
Mihai Ghimpu and Ion Hadarca are participating in the events held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the declaration of Lithuania's independence.
