Monday’s meeting of the Chisinau City Hall opened with a moment of silence in honor of the young man who is said to have died after maltreated by police officers. The General Prosecutor’s Office says he got poisoned with an unknown substance, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The parents said that according to the information provided by medical institutions and as they could see, Valeriu Boboc had several ribs broken besides a wound on the face. He was probably beaten as the ribs could not be broken as a result of a fall,” the Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said. “This case shows that the Communist authorities in Moldova resort to unprecedented violence,” he added. He challenged the doctors’ diagnosis, saying it was made in non-transparent conditions and is not accurate. According to the head of the Health Division Mihai Moldovanu, the results of the medical examination will be made public next week by the Legal Medicine Center of the Ministry of Health. Moldovanu also said that the pathologist that examined the dead body is employee of the center and cannot provide additional information without the consent of the institution’s administration. In a communiqué, the General Prosecutor’s Office says that Valeriu Boboc died on the night of April 8 on the way to the Emergency Hospital. “According to the autopsy report, the bodily injuries he suffered, namely the broken ribs, could not have caused the man’s death,” the communiqué says. “The prosecutors are ready to order an international investigation into this case so as to exclude suspicions about the cause of death.” Valeriu Boboc was arrested by the police for participating in the April 7 violent protests. The 23-year-old man has a child aged one year and a half. His family found out about his death on Friday evening. He was buried on Sunday.
