Most of national media outlets were politically biased in 2014, report

The decision to suspend the retransmission of a Russian TV channel for not obeying the national legislation intensified the discord between the Moldovan authorities and the local authorities of Gagauzia and caused controversy in society. The parliamentary elections were held on the battlefield of the supporters of the two courses – the pro-European one and the pro-Russian one – the largest part of the national media outlets being politically biased. These are some of the general conclusions contained in the report on the situation of the media in Moldova in 2014, which was made public by the Independent Journalism Center, IPN reports.

According to the report, in 2014 the authority of the Broadcasting Coordination Council was very weak given the anachronic legislation and the confirmation of the political bias of its members, with the public broadcasters’ dependence on the political factor hindering their good functioning.

The national public broadcaster “Teleradio-Moldova” hasn’t have an administrative body for over a year because Parliament didn’t name six members of the Supervisory Board, while the regional broadcaster “Teleradio-Gagauzia” was hit by conflicts between its executive bodies before the elections for the post of Governor of the region and of the local general elections.

The report includes a chapter centering on the situation of the media in the Transnistrian region. It speaks about the control imposed by the secessionist authorities on the mass media of the region, including on the online resources.

The report’s forecasts for the mass media in 2015 are not very optimistic, given that the events and information flow this year will also center on the local general elections that will take place in summer.
