MP Victor Popa chosen as Constitutional Court judge

Lawmaker VictorPopa was elected as judge of the Constitutional Court by Parliament on March 29. As many as 51 MPs voted for him. The Communists voted against. VictorPopa will be sworn in at a Parliament sitting next week, IPN reports.

Victor Popa headed the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities. He entered the legislative body on the lists of Liberal Party, but is not a party member.

The Democratic faction also proposed a candidate for constitutional judge. This is Moldova’s Ambassador to Italy Aurel Baiesu. As the diplomat is not in the country, the issue will be examined next week.

Two of the six Constitutional Court judges are put forward by the Government, two by Parliament, while two by the Supreme Council of Magistrates. The terms in office of the constitutional judges designated by the legislature expired on February 23.
