Municipality annuls authorization for construction in Europe’s Square

The City Hall annulled the authorization for the construction of a café in Europe’s Square in the Public Garden Stephen the Great in the center of the city, Info-Prim Neo reports. “I put forward the issue several times during meetings, awaiting for reactions, for opinions of colleagues and we went stage by stage, wondering where we’d end up and from where would come the reactions. From what I saw, the reactions came from outside and not from the inside”, Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca said during Friday’s City Hall meeting, December 28. According to the official, in 1995 the company was allowed to build the trolleybus station on Stefan cel Mare si Sfant Avenue, no. 101, alongside a trade point. In 2000, it managed to rent more space. In 2008, the rental contract was prolonged, allowing for temporary constructions. In 2011, the title “temporary construction” was replaced by “point of public alimentation with summer terrace”. “I understand they wanted a terrace on the Alley of Classics, were we could drink a beer with Ion Creanga, Mihai Eminescu, or plum brandy with Vasile Alecsandri and others”, said Chirtoaca. He demanded the termination of the rental contract and the demolition of the build site fence. Previously, representatives of several NGOs protested against the building of this café. They tried to remove the fence, saying that the cafe had no place near the Alley of Classics and didn’t fit in with the architecture in the center of Chisinau.
