A contingent of 20 National Army troops will participate in the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). This is the first United Nations mission in which Moldova participates with a military contingent.
The contingent will be deployed in Lebanon in August 2022, where it will carry out security and guard missions at military sites and patrol assigned areas.
The Moldovan troops will participate in the mission as part of the Italian contingent, following an experience of good cooperation in the KFOR peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.
Prior to this, the National Army participated in UN peacekeeping missions only with military observers and general staff officers.
UNIFIL was established in March 1978 to ensure the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, restore international peace and security, and assist the Lebanese government with restoring its authority to the area. On the request of the Lebanese government, the UNIFIL mandate is renewed annually by the UN Security Council. The UNIFIL mission currently employs about 10,500 military personnel from 45 countries.
