The National College of Psychologists is to be set up in the Republic of Moldova. The institution will regulate, authorize and supervise psychological practice at the highest professional standards and requirements. This is provided in a draft law that was examined by the Parliament’s commission for social protection, health and family. The bill is to be submitted to Parliament for approval.

According to the legislative body’s press service, the National College of Psychologists will be a public law institution, a professional, apolitical, autonomous and independent association. It will be financed with state budget funds.

The legislative initiative was proposed by PAS MP Liliana Grosu and is developed in cooperation with national experts Daniela Sâmboteanu and Virginia Rusnac. The document was publicly consulted with representatives of the psychologists' community, civil society and academia.

The bill also contains aspects related to the mapping and continuous professional development of psychologists. A system of attestation of psychologists, with a periodicity of at least five years, is defined. Also, the Common Register of Psychologists will ensure the systematized recording of information about psychologists who provide psychological and psychotherapeutic assistance services within the public and private system and with the right to free practice.

According to the author of the legislative initiative, the need to develop a legal framework to regulate the work of psychologists lies in the importance of ensuring quality standards, which protect both professionals and beneficiaries of psychological services.

The document also provides for the institution of the professional holiday Psychologist's Day, which will be marked annually on the date of the adoption of the law.
