National Division season ends, no change in standings
The last round of the National Division 2009/10 season held on Sunday, May 23, brought no changes on the table. With an insurmountable lead, Sheriff Tiraspol retained the title, as a 2-0 win over St. Gheorge Suruceni merely confirmed their supremacy, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The second-best, Iskra-Stal, were held to a 1-1 draw by Dynamo at Bender. Olympia Balti kept the third spot despite losing 2-0 to Viitorul at Orhei.
This season's ill-starred team Zimbru Chisinau defeated Academia UTM, 2-0, as Dacia Chisinau managed the same score against FC Tiraspol. Rapid Ghidighici trashed 6-0 the bottom-placed Nistru Otaci.
[Final National Division Standings:]
1. Sheriff – 84 points (33 matches);
2. Iskra-Stal – 65;
3. Olympia – 60;
4. Zimbru – 59;
5. Dacia – 58;
6. CSCA-Rapid – 45;
7. Academia – 42;
8. Viitorul – 36;
9. FC Tiraspol – 34;
10. Dynamo – 32;
11. Sf. Gheorghe – 24;
12. Nistru – 11.
Sheriff will play in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, Dacia in the second qualifying round of Europa League, while Iskra-Stal and Olympia in the first round.
St. Gheorge now face a playoff game with the Division A second-best, unless the latter refuse or are refused promotion. Nistru Otaci are in a similar situation, and their chances to avoid relegation are oddly high enough despite coming off last.
The last game of the Moldovan 2009/10 football season is the Moldova Cup Final, in which Dacia will meet Sheriff at Zimbru stadium on May 30.
