National economy develops asymmetrically from regional viewpoint, study

In Moldova, the economy develops asymmetrically from regional viewpoint, with excessive concentration in the municipality of Chisinau, followed by the municipality of Balti at a great distance. The expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul” Iurie Gotisan said the inequalities are caused by the uneven distribution, mainly of the production factors, and the different quality of the technological and institutional infrastructure, IPN reports.

“In general, the current disparities in regional development can be attributed to the consequences of the defective economic management in the ex-USSR, these being also a factor of the different industrialization and incomplete urbanization processes in the country. These processes accelerated in the period of transition,” said Iurie Gotisan.

To overcome the situation, the expert recommends strengthening the self-financing capacities of the local public authorities, promptly implementing the regional development framework and working out a national system for monitoring all the interventions in the development regions.
