An exhibition titled “Literary values from the library of Noul Neamț Monastery” about the history of this religious foundation was mounted at the National Library of the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.
According to the organizers, the history of the monastery is related to the Neamțului lavra from over the Prut, being one of the largest Moldovan medieval centers of culture and education. The exhibition presents a small part of the rich library of Noul Neamț Monastery – books in the Romanian, Slavic, Latin, French, Greek, German and Russia languages.
The monastery’s library consists of almost 2,000 handwritten and printed old books. In the interwar period, it was considered the most valuable library of all the monastic libraries. The library was primarily supplemented with the contribution of priest Andronic, archimandrite l Conon Arămescu-Donici and Metropolitan Bishop Iosif Naniescu.
In 1945-1958, as a result of the liquidation of some of the monasteries (Curchi, Căpriana, Hârbovăț, Hâncu), a part of the possessions of these, mostly books, were saved and taken to Noul Neamț Monastery. On December 16, 1962, Noul Neamț Monastery was also closed and its archive and library books that could be saved were taken to the State Central Archive of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic on the initiative of A. Nikitich.
The exhibition hosted by the central block of the National Library can be visited until March 31.
